Recently I volunteered to be a reader reviewer. The genre I’ve agreed to read is one that has really never interested me before. I considered romance to be unrealistic fluff about love starved women finding their prince charming who was like no man who has ever lived. I wasn’t interested in such shallow plotless stories. But I’ve come to realize that not all and probably not most of contemporary romance is as I had imagined. So I decided to broaden my reading horizons and go on an adventure to discover just what is being written.
I’ve not read many of any of the romance genres and I have discovered that there are several. When a book is good I read to the exclusion of everything else in my life. Take A Risk by Scarlett Finn is one of the first books of the romantic suspense genre I’ve read. The story was so engaging that I read it in one day.
Lyssa Cutler, a psychiatrist specializing in sex therapy, has a stalker. Characterized in much like the real world the police are unable to help as the stalker has done nothing to indicate that he poses a real threat. She hires Cole Warner, aka Trapper, who was recommended to her as some one who could find and stop the stalker. I really enjoyed the story with plenty of suspense and the end was a surprise even though after the fact I could recall unrecognized hints about the identity of the stalker. I like a good mystery novel and Take A Risk did not disappoint.
The suspense and mystery of the novel was engaging and I wanted to know what would happen next. The romantic relationship was handled beautifully and the conflict was believable as depicted for the romantic hero. There was a great deal more sexual scenes than I am used to, actually I’m not used to these kind of sizzling scenes, but even for me they did not detract from the plot and were instrumental in developing the romantic relationship between Lyssa and Cole.
I would recommend Take A Risk for those who enjoy a good romantic suspense with plenty of mystery. The story is good, the characters are not shallow and the romance is steamy.
Happy reading!

She’s going to start reading an anthology of some of my favorite pnr/dark fantasy authors. I can’t wait to find out what she thinks of the Dark Hunters!

Excellent review. There are so many more genres than years ago. The stereo typed “bodice ripper” has gone the way of hand written letters. Some still do but there are new kids on the writing scene. Even the rules of romance are different. Society has matured and morphed into new acceptance. This has been often led by the writers. Dabble more and share what you find, most of us don’t have time to find all the gems that are out there.

I’m just beginning to see that romance authors have come a long way since I was young woman. Several sub-genres available and I’m on a quest to become acquainted with several.
